Pay It Forward

🌟 Volume 10 🌟

Setting the Context

In earlier chapters, we explored how discovering your purpose in life helps you rise above the Self. One powerful way to live this truth is by embracing the philosophy of “Pay It Forward.”

At its heart, “Pay It Forward” is about extending kindness, generosity, and compassion without expecting anything in return. It’s an act of goodwill that not only benefits others, but also inspires a cycle of positivity across society. No wonder the world’s most successful leaders, innovators, and changemakers advocate this principle—it’s not just about helping others, but about strengthening the collective well-being of humanity.

Let’s reflect on why we should live by this philosophy.

1. Look Out for a Better Society

Every one of us dreams of a society that is safe, sustainable, and prosperous. A world where our children inherit clean air, safe water, and strong communities. When you pay it forward, you’re thinking of this bigger picture—not just yourself. Your actions, however small, ripple out to create a better world for future generations.

2. Rise Above Self

As discussed in Volume 3, true purpose comes when we go beyond self-interest. Paying it forward shifts our focus to others, reminding us to act with empathy and compassion. The joy of helping someone else—especially a stranger—cannot be measured. It’s an act that erases ego and builds shared humanity.

3. Joy that is Limitless

Unlike material rewards, the joy of giving is infinite. The receiver feels valued, while you experience fulfillment. This shared joy strengthens connections and proves that kindness is not a transaction but a bond that unites us all.

4. Shaping Future Generations

Children often mirror what they see. By living a life rooted in generosity, we leave a legacy of compassion for the next generation. Paying it forward isn’t just an act—it becomes a tradition of humanity, one that grows stronger as it’s passed on.

5. A Daily Habit of Kindness

Paying it forward doesn’t need to be a grand gesture. It can be a small, daily act—sharing time, guidance, or even just a kind word. I personally schedule a few hours every day for this practice, and I’ve found that the benefits are immense. It changes how you think, how you act, and how you connect with others.

Memoir: My Journey of Paying It Forward

Beyond my professional career, I’ve always sought ways to give back to society. Over the years, I have been part of many non-profit initiatives with incredible teams and friends who share the same vision. Here are a few moments that shaped my journey:

  • Punjab Heritage Bhavan, Navi Mumbai, India – With the Punjabi Cultural Welfare Association (PCWA), we built a three-storied center that celebrates culture and community.
  • 2001 Gujarat Earthquake Relief – Collected donations and distributed shelters and relief materials to affected families.
  • Education for Children (2004–2009) – Together with my friend Ram Nabar and others, we funded the schooling of 36 children across four villages in Punjab.
  • Tsunami Relief (2004 India, 2011 Japan) – Worked alongside PCWA members to support affected families in both countries.
  • Uttarakhand Disaster (2013, India) – Partnered with friends and PCWA to deliver relief to 300 families and 284 schoolchildren. Later, organized the Uttarakhand Charity Walk (30 km), showcasing 30 locations to promote tourism and awareness.
  • Chennai Floods (2015, India) – Distributed relief material to 2,000 girls in Saidapet, Chennai.
  • Cyclone Fani in Odisha (2019, India) – Supported efforts to bring relief to affected people in Puri, Odisha area.
  • COVID – Supporting Our Seniors (SOS) Program (2020-2023 Dallas, Texas) – Led the SOS program to provide free grocery to over 1500+ seniors across Dallas Fort-Worth Area during COVID times.
  • Floods in Punjab (Punjab, India 2023)- Supported in providing education expense of children in one of the school in flood-affected in Patiala Region.

Each initiative was not just about aid—it was about community, compassion, and commitment. These moments reinforced my belief that “Paying It Forward” is not just an idea, but a way of life.

Closing Reflection

“Pay It Forward” teaches us that true success lies not in what we achieve for ourselves, but in what we create for others. Every act of kindness—big or small—has the power to inspire.

As you look ahead, ask yourself:

  • How can I make someone’s day better today?
  • What simple act of kindness can I share that may ripple far beyond me?

Let us all rise above the Self and build a future rooted in generosity, compassion, and shared humanity.

Because the real innovation we need in this world… is kindness.
