Finding a Purpose Greater Than Self

In my book My Experiments with Innovation, we explore the idea that the real IP (Intellectual Property) of a person is their Imagination and Purpose. When imagination and purpose are made relevant—to ourselves and to those around us—we move closer to achieving meaningful goals.

But here’s a crucial insight: not all purposes are the same.

There are two types of purposes:

  1. Self-Centric – focused on personal growth, family, or career.
  2. Higher Than Self – transcending beyond status, salary, or recognition.

The Eight Categories of Purpose

As we progress through life, our purpose evolves through different stages:

🔹 Self – Growth, education, skills, and career development.
🔹 Family – Prioritizing children, spouse, and close loved ones.
🔹 Community – Supporting friends, neighbors, and colleagues.
🔹 Religion – Finding meaning in faith and cultural identity.
🔹 Values – Living by freedom, fairness, and equality.
🔹 Country – Serving the nation, as seen in soldiers, leaders, and patriots.
🔹 Humankind – Contributing to global well-being, like Mother Teresa.
🔹 Universe – Rare figures such as prophets and gurus, serving a cosmic vision.

Why Purpose Matters

A Self-Centric Purpose helps us grow and achieve.
But a Higher Than Self Purpose gives us:
✨ Greater resilience in challenges.
✨ A deeper sense of passion and honesty.
✨ The ability to work harder with joy.

The higher the level of your purpose, the stronger your inner strength becomes.

The Big Question for You

➡️ What purpose are you living for today—Self, Family, Community, or Higher Than Self?
➡️ And how can you take the next step toward a purpose greater than yourself?

Because the truth is: when your purpose rises above Self, your life rises with it.
